european picture books - pinocchio

Pinocchio, illustrated by Sara Fanelli, has been out for quite a while and it's a book I knew I eventually wanted to purchase so I was delighted to find it when I was still living in the UK.

The collage illustrations are so experimental, especially for a children's book. It's really inspiring to flip through and makes me want to push myself to think outside the box more with my own illustration work.

The hardcover edition of Pinocchio comes in a slim box that the book slides out of which is cleverly illustrated. The characters appear on the back and their noses grow as the book is slid from its case.

30

Photobucket

Today I'm celebrating my 30th birthday. Although much of me feels exactly the same as I always have, I must admit that I do feel a bit different today. Perhaps a bit more grown up. But just a bit.

The celebration plans are simple. A fresh baguette with Bonne Maman jam and double creamed Camembert for breakfast. Perhaps some coffee at a Parisian cafe. Drawing. A meal out with my hubby and maybe wrap up the day with wine on the steps of the Sacré-Coeur this evening.

I should probably point out that the stripe of white hair in the above photo didn't magically appear today. I noticed it for the first time about a year ago.

I think it's funny :)

I was so inspired by this video that I had to do a portrait of Mr. Jeffers, one of my favorite illustrators, based on it.

I've never really painted with watercolors before; I've always enjoyed the thickness of acrylics too much to give them up. However, because watercolors are much easier to travel with, I decided to give them a shot and force myself to go outside my comfort zone and try something else.
